Our Hormone-Conscious Approach
At Indie + Mae, we believe you deserve to know what goes into the products you use every day.
Our hormone-conscious approach means we carefully screen our ingredients and formulate without ingredients that we identify as known endocrine disruptors, based on current available scientific and regulatory information.
Every Indie + Mae product is also made using 100% natural ingredients. However, our approach goes beyond simply choosing ingredients because they are natural. We thoughtfully consider each ingredient, why it is included and whether it meets our formulation standards.
What does hormone-conscious mean?
Hormones are part of the body’s natural signalling system and help regulate many important processes. Certain substances may interfere with the normal functioning of this system and are commonly referred to as endocrine-disrupting substances or endocrine disruptors.
When we describe Indie + Mae as hormone-conscious, we mean that we take a careful and considered approach to ingredient selection.
We formulate without ingredients that we identify as known endocrine disruptors and continue to review credible scientific and regulatory information as it becomes available.
This approach forms part of our commitment to creating gentle, thoughtful and transparent natural skincare, body care and self-care products.
Our ingredient-screening standard
Our hormone-conscious approach is an internal Indie + Mae formulation standard. It is not a government certification, medical accreditation or independent guarantee. As part of our ingredient-screening process, we consider:
- Current information from recognised scientific and regulatory bodies
- Relevant cosmetic ingredient safety assessments
- Supplier information and ingredient documentation
- How and why an ingredient will be used in a formulation
- New credible evidence or regulatory guidance as it becomes available
Our formulations must also meet our wider Indie + Mae ingredient philosophy and product-quality requirements.
Ingredients we choose not to use
We formulate without ingredients that we identify as known endocrine disruptors.
Our approach also means we avoid ingredients that do not align with our natural formulation philosophy, including synthetic fragrances, parabens and other synthetic ingredients.
Ingredient science continues to develop, and regulatory bodies may assess or update their guidance about individual substances over time. We remain committed to reviewing our standards as new credible information becomes available.
100% natural ingredients
Every Indie + Mae formulation is made with 100% natural ingredients (even the niacinamide we use is naturally derived!).
We choose plant oils, botanical extracts and other carefully selected ingredients to create products that are effective, enjoyable and aligned with our natural philosophy.
However, “natural” does not automatically mean that an ingredient will be suitable for every person. Natural ingredients can still cause sensitivities or reactions, which is why we provide a complete ingredient list for every product.
We encourage you to read the ingredient list carefully, particularly if you have known allergies, sensitivities or personal concerns about a specific ingredient.
What our hormone-conscious approach does not promise
Our hormone-conscious standard is designed to help customers make more informed choices. It should not be interpreted as a medical or absolute safety guarantee. The term does not mean that our products:
- Have been medically proven to protect or regulate hormones
- Treat or prevent hormonal conditions
- Are guaranteed to have no hormonal effect in every possible circumstance
- Are suitable for every person, allergy, sensitivity or health condition
- Have been certified as “hormone-safe” by a government or medical organisation
- Can replace advice from a qualified healthcare professional
Our products are cosmetics and personal-care products. They are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a medical condition.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and health conditions
Every person’s circumstances are different.
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, undergoing fertility treatment, managing a diagnosed hormone-sensitive condition, taking prescribed medication, or concerned about a particular ingredient should speak with their doctor, pharmacist or another qualified healthcare professional before using a product.
A healthcare professional who understands your individual health history is best placed to provide personalised advice.
Transparency matters to us
We want you to feel informed and confident about the products you choose.
A full ingredient list is available on each Indie + Mae product page and on the product packaging. We encourage you to review this information and contact us if you have a question about a particular product or ingredient. Please email us at hello@indieandmae.com if you have any questions at all.
Our hormone-conscious approach is about thoughtful formulation, ingredient transparency and making considered choices based on the best information available to us.
It is one part of our wider commitment to creating 100% natural products that turn everyday routines into meaningful moments of self-care.
Frequently asked questions
Does 100% natural mean a product cannot affect hormones?
Not necessarily. Whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic does not, by itself, determine how it may interact with the body. This is why we do not rely on natural origin alone. We also screen our ingredients against our hormone-conscious formulation standard.
Are Indie + Mae products suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change how your skin responds to products, and individual healthcare needs vary. If you are concerned, we recommend checking the complete ingredient list and speaking with your doctor, midwife, pharmacist or another qualified healthcare professional before use.
Can I use Indie + Mae products if I have a hormone-sensitive condition?
We cannot provide personalised medical advice or guarantee that a cosmetic product will be appropriate for a particular condition. Please show the complete ingredient list to your doctor, pharmacist or relevant healthcare professional before use.
Where can I find the full ingredient list?
The complete ingredient list for each product is available on its product page and product packaging. If you have questions about a particular ingredient, please contact our team before purchasing or using the product.
