Skincare Routine for Teenagers | Simple Steps
Share
If you've ever watched a skincare routine online and wondered when washing your face became a 14-step event, you're not alone.
Cleanser. Toner. Essence. Serum. Another serum. Exfoliant. Mask. Oil. Eye cream. Moisturiser.
And somehow we're only halfway through....
When you're building a skincare routine for teenagers, complicated doesn't automatically mean better. Young skin has its own needs, and a simple routine you can actually stick to is often a much better starting point.
For most teens, we'd begin with: Cleanse. Support. Moisturise. Protect.
Let's break that down.
Why Does Teenage Skin Change?
Teenage skin can be unpredictable. Hormonal changes during adolescence can affect oil production, which is one reason blemishes and shine often become more noticeable during the teenage years.
Some teenagers become oily. Some experience dryness. Some somehow experience both at once.
Sport, sunscreen, sweat, makeup, stress and everyday habits can all influence how skin feels too.
That doesn't mean you need to fight your skin. You simply need to learn how to care for it.
How Many Products Should a Teenage Skincare Routine Have?
A good starting point is:
- Gentle cleanser
- A serum, if there is a specific reason for one
- Moisturiser
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day
You do not need every trending product. Starting with fewer products also makes it easier to notice what your skin actually likes.
If you introduce six new products simultaneously and your skin becomes irritated, figuring out which one caused the problem becomes rather tricky.
Step 1: Cleanse Gently
Cleansing helps remove excess oil, sweat, sunscreen, makeup & everyday build-up.
The key word is gently. Skin does not need to be scrubbed aggressively to be properly cleansed. Wet your face with lukewarm water and massage your cleanser gently over the skin before rinsing.
Our Clean Slate Foaming Cleanser is the first step in the Indie + Mae Reset routine for young and blemish-prone skin.

Step 2: Use a Serum for a Reason
Serum isn't mandatory. If your skin is doing perfectly well without one, you don't need to add a product simply because it looks nice lined up beside the sink.
If excess oil or blemish-prone skin is a concern, one ingredient you may come across is niacinamide. Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide is widely used in skincare to support the skin barrier, hydration and a balanced-looking complexion.
Our Clear Skin Serum contains naturally derived niacinamide and fits between cleansing and moisturising in the Reset routine.
One targeted serum. No serum wardrobe required.

Step 3: Moisturise
Yes, even if your skin is oily. Oil isn't the same as hydration. A moisturiser helps support the skin barrier and keep the skin feeling comfortable.
Our Fresh Start Face Cream was created as the final skincare step in the Reset routine and also contains naturally derived niacinamide.
You don't need a huge amount. A light, even layer is enough.

Step 4: Protect Your Skin
During the day, finish your routine with appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen and follow its directions. New Zealand UV can be harsh. Caring for skin isn't only about what you cleanse or moisturise with. Protecting it matters too.
A Simple Morning Skincare Routine for Teenagers
- Cleanse if your skin needs it. If your skin feels oily in the morning, gently cleanse. Some skin types may prefer simply rinsing in the morning and cleansing properly at night.
- Moisturise. Apply your moisturiser.
- Sunscreen. Finish with broad-spectrum SPF. Three straightforward morning steps. You may even have time for breakfast.
A Simple Night Skincare Routine for Teenagers
At night, we'd place more emphasis on cleansing properly.
- Cleanse. Remove sunscreen, makeup, sweat and excess oil.
- Serum. If you're using a serum appropriate for your skin, apply it next.
- Moisturise. Finish with moisturiser.
That's your evening routine. You do not need to turn the bathroom into a laboratory.
Do Teenagers Need Toner?
No skincare product is compulsory simply because it has become a traditional "step". Toner can have a place in some routines. But a teenage skincare routine isn't automatically incomplete without it.
The same applies to essences, face oils, eye creams, multiple serums and masks.
Ask what the product is meant to do. Then ask whether your skin actually needs that.
Should Teenagers Exfoliate?
Exfoliation can have a place in skincare, but more isn't better. A common issue is using several exfoliating products without realising they overlap.
If you're new to skincare, establish your simple everyday routine first.
If you later introduce an exfoliant, follow its directions and avoid layering multiple exfoliating products without understanding what they do.
Should Teenagers Use Retinol?
Not every teenager needs to use an adult anti-ageing retinol product.
There are medically recognised uses for retinoids, including acne treatments that may be recommended by health professionals. That is different from deciding you need an anti-ageing routine because retinol is trending online.
If acne is a concern, speak with a qualified professional about appropriate treatment rather than building a routine around social-media advice.
What If You Have Blemish-Prone Skin?
Try not to panic every time a blemish appears. Blemishes are common during adolescence.
Keep your routine gentle and consistent. Avoid picking if possible.
And don't respond to every breakout by throwing out your entire skincare routine and starting again.
If blemishes are painful, severe, persistent, causing scarring or affecting your wellbeing, seek professional advice.
How Long Should You Stick With a Teenage Skincare Routine?
Skin doesn't exist in a vacuum. Hormones, stress, sleep, weather, sport and other factors can change how it looks and feels.
Give a simple routine time before constantly replacing products. Ask:
- Does my skin feel comfortable?
- Am I experiencing irritation?
- Is the routine manageable?
- Can I use it consistently?
Consistency is seriously underrated.
What Should Parents Look For When Buying Teen Skincare?
If you're buying skincare for your teenager, focus on simplicity. Look for:
- Products suited to young skin
- Clear ingredient information
- A routine that's easy to understand
- Products selected for an actual skin concern
- Fewer unnecessary steps
And involve your teenager. A beautifully designed routine isn't much use if it permanently lives untouched in the bathroom cupboard.
The Best Skincare Routine for Teenagers Is One They'll Actually Follow
Young skin doesn't need to be perfect. Real skin has pores. Texture. Oil. The occasional blemish.
A good skincare routine for teenagers is about learning a few useful habits and caring for the skin you've got. Not chasing whatever skin happens to look like through a filter.
