How Did We Not Know Hormones Were Running The Whole Show?

For years, "hormonal" was basically shorthand for one thing. A mood. A moment. Something to laugh off or brace for 😅 Turns out hormones have never just been about mood.
They're like a computer operating system behind almost everything your body does. We can’t see it working with the naked eye, but it is humming away in the background long before anything feels off enough to notice.
Most of us were never taught this hormonal health operating system exists let alone how it works...
Where hormones are actually showing up
Skin. That breakout that shows up right on schedule every month isn't bad luck. Oestrogen and progesterone shift how much oil your skin produces and how fast it heals, so your skin is basically a live readout of what's happening hormonally that week. Dry patches, sudden sensitivity, even how quickly a mark fades can all trace back here.
Sleep. A night where your body just won't switch off often traces back to progesterone dipping, since it has a natural calming effect. Cortisol plays a part too. Too much of it in the evening, and your body thinks it's still time to be alert, right when it should be winding down.
Energy and cravings. The 3pm wall some days and not others comes down to blood sugar and cortisol being out of sync. Energy dips hard and cravings show up looking for a quick fix. Not a willpower problem, just chemistry doing what it's designed to do.
Mood. Serotonin, oestrogen and progesterone interact more than most of us realise, which is why some weeks feel calm and others feel overwhelming. There's a reason, and reasons are easier to work with than mystery.
Digestion. Even gut function shifts across the cycle, thanks to how oestrogen and progesterone affect gut motility. Bloating that seems to appear out of nowhere often has a hormonal reason too.
So what happens if we just ignore all of this?
Mostly, nothing dramatic happens overnight. That's the tricky part.
Hormonal imbalance tends to build quietly, so it's easy to write off the early signs as tiredness, stress, or just a bad week.
Skin gets more reactive over time. Sleep gets lighter and less restorative. Energy dips become the norm instead of the exception. Stress starts to feel harder to shake off than it used to, and the recovery time after a hard week starts stretching out too.
None of it happens because you did something wrong. It happens because hormones respond to everything around them, sleep, stress, food, what's in your skincare and your environment, and small daily inputs add up over months and years until the pattern becomes hard to ignore. Hormonal health is a long term thing ladies.
The takeaway
Hormones were never just about mood. They're running skin, sleep, energy, digestion and so much more.
The good news is they respond just as reliably to good inputs as bad ones.
Positive hormonal health inputs like consistent sleep, whole-food meals, and lower everyday exposure to synthetic ingredients and other disruptors all add up over time. None of it needs to be perfect, it just needs to be
consistent.
And if you are still battling with what feels like hormonal imbalance, there are some indepth testing options available now that you can access through a Naturopath or Herbalist.
It doesn’t have to stay a mystery.
